YEAR END GIVING
In previous years during the month of December all registered parishioners of Holy Apostles Parish had received a letter encouraging us to consider making a special year end monetary gift to the parish. This was done to let people know that a donation such as this would be of benefit both to the individual in providing a deduction when preparing one’s income tax return and providing extra resources for the funding of parish ministries and the ever increasing expenses for the maintaining of our buildings and properties. Our parishioners have consistently been most generous in responding to such requests.
This year, however, you have not received a year end giving letter. Because of the “Upon This Rock” Initiative which asked us to make a commitment of extraordinary support of our parish and diocesan ministries for the next five years, to which many of our parishioners responded most generously, we are not making the customary request of everyone for a special gift at this time. Instead, I would simply ask you to consider including Holy Apostles Parish among those to whom you will give a Christmas gift.
Because Christmas Day occurs on a Sunday this year, the regular Sunday offering is also the Christmas offering. The same will be true for the following Sunday, January 1st, the Holy Day in celebration of Mary, the Mother of God. That’s why we have two envelopes for these days. If we did not, the result would be two less offerings for the calendar year 2016 which will have an impact on our financial resources. I would therefore encourage our parishioners to be aware of this situation and to consider making a year end gift.
For those who receive envelopes you could do so easily by using both the Sunday and Holy Day envelopes for December 25 and January 1. If you do not receive church envelopes, I would invite you to make a year end gift and enclose it in an envelope marked for this purpose. Especially at the holiday time we are all receiving requests for help from many different agencies and charitable organizations, and it is easy to become annoyed by them. Nevertheless, as a not-for-profit organization your parish of necessity has to rely on the generosity of our members to keep the ship afloat and I have every confidence that we will continue to demonstrate responsible stewardship.
That being said, there is a type of giving that is expected of us as a people of faith throughout the year. Here I am referring to the offering of our prayers of praise and thanksgiving to God for the many ways in which we are blessed with divine grace. Even if we are experiencing difficulties and significant challenges in our lives, God is always present to sustain and guide us. As we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth, let us end the year 2016 with a renewed commitment to living the Gospel.
Be at peace,
Father Dennis Mende
