COLLINS CHRISTIAN MINISTRY

Dear Holy Apostles Parishioners:

Collins Christian Ministry is dedicated to sharing the “Good News” of the gospel with the inmates at the State Prison in Gowanda. Over the past 38 years, our bi-annual weekends and follow-up weekly gatherings has helped to establish a vibrant Christian Community within the prison walls. Your prayers and generous donations of cookies, fruit pies, money and notes of support and encouragement have given hope to the hopeless.

As we prepare for another weekend, please consider supporting the ministry. There will be an insert in a future bulletin to explain how you can play an active role in bringing the Holy Spirit to this weekend.

May God bless you for your help.

Deacon Sam Pellerito

YOUR FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP

A JOURNEY OF FAITH

Faith is the foundation upon which we build a life of service to God and others. Read about the faith journey of our newest diocesan priests and seminary alumni at www.cks.edu and share your faith story on the seminary’s Facebook page. By sharing our faith journeys, we give each other strength and help ensure the faith journey of generations to come.

The annual appeal for Christ the King Seminary will take place at our church in two weeks. Please show your support for the mission of Christ the King by praying for those preparing for ministry at our seminary and by giving generously to the annual appeal. Your prayers and your gift to Christ the King help to ensure the future of the church in our area. For more information about our seminary’s mission or programs, go to www.cks.edu.

START-UPS

In this day and age it is common for people to begin new business ventures, mostly on-line, with the goal of providing newly designed goods and services which will improve our lives and the way we do things.  We give the name “start-ups” to this phenomenon, and the response that we give them determines their success or failure.  The month of September brings another variety of start-ups that affect significantly how we go about our day to day affairs.  It’s the beginning of the new school year.  Whether or not we have school age children, the start of the academic year changes our routine if only by heeding the caution, “school’s open, drive safely.”

In the Church as well we have some start-ups coming soon.  Our religious education classes will begin next Sunday morning at the Holy Family Center.  At all Masses this weekend we are praying for our Catechists who volunteer their time to assist in the formation of our young people in the Catholic faith.  They are guided in their work by Dianne Woleen who directs our entire program and by Paula Slagle who coordinates our high school classes.

Our music ministry is also getting ready for a new season, and it is start-up time for rehearsals for our Holy Apostles Choir (Tuesday evenings at SS Peter & Paul) directed by Bill Chandler, the Jubilate Singers (Thursday evenings at St. John) directed by Donna Gatz, and the Festival Hand Bell Choir (Tuesday evenings at SS Peter & Paul) directed by Anne Dolce.   In October they will begin assisting us in raising our minds and hearts to God at our Sunday Masses, and I would encourage anyone who might be thinking about participating in this ministry to come to a rehearsal.

Another parish start-up in September is the Catechumenate.  Rooted in the Greek language the term refers to the instructions given to adults who are preparing to become Catholic and to those baptized Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of initiation.  Our study sessions will begin this week, and if you would be interested in attending please contact me at 664-5703 or dwm508@aol.com.

Included with our several start-ups is the beginning of a new Bible study this Wednesday evening at SS Peter & Paul Church hall. This season we are looking into the Psalms.  The format for the study will be a video presentation followed by a guided discussion.  We begin at 7:00 PM each week, right after Evening Prayer which is offered at 6:30 PM in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Joseph Chapel.

As our various start-ups take place this month, let us pray that they may successful and what they offer us may strengthen our lives of faith and help us to live more fully the teachings of  Christ.

Be at peace,

Father Dennis Mende
